Limiting Beliefs vs. Freeing Truths
At the start of every new year, the recurring theme is to set intentions and vision as well as creating goals. Each one of us feels a sense of motivation, encouragement, and accomplishment during this process. However, many of us lose sight of our intention, get blurred vision, and do not reach our goals. What happens that stops us from achieving success? One of the biggest reasons is doubt. Doubt sets in and makes us believe that our goals are out of reach.
These self-limiting beliefs are assumptions or perceptions that we have about ourselves and about the way the world works. These assumptions are “self-limiting” because in one way or another they are holding us back from achieving what we are capable of.
There are 3 types of limiting beliefs:
What we believe about the world
What we believe about others
What we believe about ourselves.
“Man often becomes what he believes himself to be. If I keep on saying to myself that I cannot do a certain thing, it is possible that I may end by really becoming incapable of doing it. On the contrary, if I have the belief that I can do it, I shall surely acquire the capacity to do it even if I may not have it at the beginning.” - Mahatma Gandhi
On the other hand, our lives improve only when we take chances. The first and most difficult risk we can take is to be honest with ourselves. When we are honest with ourselves we discover our freeing truths. In order to recognize these truths, there are some simple steps you can take:
STEP 1: Recognize the Power of your Beliefs – Our thoughts determine the direction of our lives both positively and negatively.
STEP 2: Confront your limiting Beliefs – What is the source of your limiting Belief? (Bad Relationship, Past experience, news, your own thoughts?)
STEP 3: Record the Belief – Writing it down helps us to externalize it.
STEP 4: Reframe the Belief – Sometimes we can simply contradict a limiting belief. Other times we need to build a case against it and look at the obstacles from a different angle.
STEP 5: Revise the Belief – Write down the Freeing Truth that corresponds to the old limiting belief.
STEP 6: Reorient yourself to the new belief – Commit to living the freeing truth.
Imagine what our 2020 could look like if we would set ourselves free from our limiting beliefs and freed our truths.
